The short version
- Oats and flaxseed are traditional staples of feeding-day snacking, and they taste good too.
- No baking, no fuss, made in one bowl in about fifteen minutes.
- Easy to grab with one hand at three in the morning.
Feeding is hungry, thirsty work, and it always seems to strike when both hands are full. These little bites live in the fridge for exactly that reason. Oats and ground flax have long been the quiet staples of feeding-day snacking, and a tub of these by the chair is a small kindness to yourself.
Ingredients
- 150g rolled oats
- 2 tbsp ground flaxseed
- 1 ripe banana, mashed, or 6 soft dates, blitzed
- 3 tbsp smooth nut or seed butter
- 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- A small handful of dark chocolate chips, optional
Method
- Put everything in a bowl and mix well until it holds together when pressed. If it feels dry, add a little more nut butter or a splash of milk; if wet, a few more oats.
- Cover and rest in the fridge for fifteen minutes so the oats and chia firm up.
- Roll into small balls, about a heaped tablespoon each.
- Keep in a tub in the fridge for up to five days.
If you want them nut-free, sunflower seed butter or tahini work just as well and keep them friendly for baby groups and shared tables.
Bubba & Me tip
Keep them in a tub in the fridge and a few by the feeding chair. The whole point is that they are there when hunger hits mid-feed.
These are a nourishing snack, not a remedy. No single food reliably increases milk supply, and the evidence for lactation foods is limited. If supply is a worry, a lactation consultant or our registered nutritional therapists can help. Contains nuts and seeds. Honey is fine for you, but never give honey to a baby under one.
