Time zones and small people

A gentle, realistic approach to travel that does not wreck their sleep, or yours.

A calm destination at golden hour

The short version

  • Small children adjust to new time zones in their own time, and pushing too hard rarely speeds it up.
  • Daylight and meals are your two strongest tools for resetting the body clock.
  • Decide whether a small time difference is even worth shifting for.
  • Plan for a few unsettled days at each end, and lower your expectations accordingly.

Work with the body clock, not against it

Children's body clocks shift gradually, and there is a limit to how fast you can rush them. Rather than fighting it, the calmest approach is to use the natural cues that reset the clock, and to accept that the first days at each end may be wobbly.

Going in with realistic expectations is half the battle. A few rough nights are normal, not a sign you have done it wrong.

Daylight and meals do the work

Light is the single biggest influence on the body clock, and mealtimes back it up. Once you arrive, shift gently onto local time using both.

Daylight is your best jet-lag tool. Get outside, eat on local time, and let the clock catch up.

Is it even worth shifting?

For a small time difference, or a short trip, it can be easier not to fully adjust at all, especially if a one or two hour shift actually suits your child's natural rhythm. Weigh the length of the trip against the upheaval of a full reset before you commit to chasing local time.

Be kind to your expectations

Plan for a few unsettled days when you land and again when you get home, and build slack into the first day back before normal life resumes. Travelling with little ones is wonderful and tiring in equal measure. Lowering the bar on those edge days makes the whole thing far more enjoyable.

Common questions

Time zones with little ones, answered

How do I help my baby adjust to a new time zone?

Use daylight and meal timings to shift gently onto local time, keep familiar sleep cues, and accept a few unsettled days. Children's body clocks reset gradually.

Should I adjust my child to local time on a short trip?

Not always. For a small difference or a short stay, it can be easier to keep closer to home time rather than putting everyone through a full reset. Weigh the trip length against the upheaval.

What helps most with baby jet lag?

Morning daylight is the strongest tool, supported by shifting meals and naps toward local timings and using darkness and routine to signal sleep at local bedtime.

How long does it take a baby to adjust to a time zone?

It varies, but expect a few days at each end. Going in with realistic expectations and building in slack makes the adjustment far less stressful.

How can I keep sleep on track while travelling?

Hold on to familiar cues, the same comforter, story and wind-down, recreate a dark room wherever you are, and let daylight and meals guide the shift gradually.

This is general guidance to help you plan. Every family and home is different, so take what is useful and leave the rest.
