The short version

  • Back to sleep, every sleep, day and night.
  • Firm, flat, clear: a firm flat mattress with nothing loose around your baby.
  • Room share for the early months, in a smoke-free space, at a comfortable temperature.

Safe sleep guidance can feel like a lot to hold, but it comes down to a few well-evidenced essentials. Learn these, set the room up to make the safe choice the easy one, and you can let go of most of the noise around them.

The essentials

  • Always place your baby on their back to sleep, for naps and at night.
  • Use a firm, flat, waterproof-covered mattress that fits the crib or cot snugly.
  • Keep the sleep space clear: no pillows, duvets, bumpers or soft toys.
  • Room share, with your baby in their own crib or cot, ideally for at least the first six months.
  • Keep the room at a comfortable temperature, and keep the space smoke-free.
  • Breastfeeding, where you can, and avoiding smoking both lower risk.

When in doubt, simpler and clearer is safer.

A word on the exhausted hours

The hardest moments are the night feeds, when it is tempting to settle your baby wherever you both happen to be. This is exactly why it helps to decide your setup in advance, while you are rested. If there is any chance you might fall asleep while feeding, a clear, safe sleep space within reach makes the safe option the path of least resistance.

Bubba & Me tip

Decide your safe-sleep setup before you are exhausted. Tired decisions at 3am are easier when the room already makes the safe choice the easy one.
